The entry level of any inventory control examples check is testing physical availability of equipment (that can be fail as a result of shutdown the equipment itself or communication channels failure). At the minimum, it means checking availability via ICMP protocol (ping) and it is desirable to check not just the fact of an answer, but the response time and the number of the lost packets: abnormal values of these parameters, as a rule, indicate about some serious problems in the network configuration. Some of these problems can be easily detected with the help of the route tracing (traceroute) - it can be also automated if there are "reference routes".
