Once this data is available, you can finally have an idea what your
network is and that it needs computer asset management. To get this
data, you'll have to create inventory records and keep them updated.
You have the right to know
In small companies, virtually every computer passes though system
administrator's loving hands, so he or she has a good idea about each
workstation. But this is not true for any mid-size or large network.
System administrators usually have low level tech support and hardware
people who do this job for them. I.e. system administrator doesn't
even see new computers - they come from the warehouse and go directly
to user after being checked by hardware specialists and registered in
asset management software. Sooner or later
system administrators don't have a slightest clue about details of
workstation configuration and current condition - they are too busy
making sure network runs properly. At some point of time it becomes
impossible to find any person who would be able to provide complete
information about specific PCs or network equipment without asset
manager software.
This again shows the need of taking inventory of your network,
hardware and software included. It may seem like a daunting task (and
it is) but once it is done, the daily checkups in computer asset software
are much less time
consuming. You'll have a log of all equipment and will be able to see
what needs to be upgraded or replaced. There will be far less
questions regarding computer asset management.
